General and Health Care Powers of Attorney for People with ADC

People suffering from AIDS should consider putting into place a durable Power of Attorney so that their personal affairs will be taken care of in the event they become incapable of taking care of themselves.

They should also consider a Health Care Power of Attorney so that end of life decisions can be made by someone they trust.

In particular, individuals who are in the late stages of HIV-1 infection are especially susceptible to AIDS Dementia Complex (ADC).  ADC is one of the most common complications of late HIV-1 infection.  It is estimated to impact up to one-third of all adults with AIDS infection.  As ADC progresses into its later stages, patients can experience major intellectual disability and may fall into a vegetative state.  While medicine continues to develop treatments to counter

ADC, people with HIV should not ignore the possibility that they may eventually become incapable of making decisions on their own behalf.

To that end, individuals with HIV or AIDS should consult with an attorney to put a durable Power of Attorney and Health Care Power of Attorney in place.
